Board Member Profiles

Mrs. Karen Treber, President

Mrs. Karen Treber was elected to the Allegany County Board of Education in November 2006. Ms. Treber's education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bryn Mawr College and a law degree (J.D.) from George Washington University. Ms. Treber has served as General Counsel for Frostburg State University since 1997. From 1986-1997, Ms. Treber worked as a corporate attorney in Washington, DC. Ms. Treber is active in education both locally and at the state level, serving on the Maryland Parent Advisory Council, the State Superintendent's Family Involvement Council, and the MSDE PreK-16 English Composition Task Force. She is also the co-chair of the Allegany County Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council and is on the Mountain Ridge High School Stadium Project Committee. Ms. Treber is active in the community as a member of the board of the Allegany Law Foundation and the Civil Service Commission for the City of Frostburg. Ms. Treber has served on numerous boards for non-profit organizations and has spoken at conferences regarding parent involvement in education. She and her husband, David, reside in Frostburg and have two sons, John and Sam, who attend Allegany County schools.

Mr. Jeff Metz, Member

Mr. Jeff Metz was re-elected to the Allegany County Board of Education on November 4, 2008. Mr. Metz's education includes a Master's Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Frostburg State University. He currently serves as President and Administrator of Egle Nursing and Rehab Center and is a partner in Foundation Rehab, Inc. Mr. Metz is active in the community as a board member and coach with Frostburg's AYSO youth soccer league. He is also a member of the Greater Cumberland Committee, the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, Lion's Club, and the Ali Ghan Shrine Club. Additionally, Mr. Metz has served as President of the Allegany/Garrett Executives of Long Term Care and as a board member with the Allegany County Department of Social Services. Finally, Mr. Metz is a life long resident of Allegany County and resides in Frostburg with his wife Jamie and their two children, Lexie and Josh.

 

 

 

 

Mr. Tom Striplin, Vice-President

Mr. Tom Striplin was originally appointed to the Allegany County School Board in May of 2004 by Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich. In 2006, he ran for and was successful in winning a four year term on the school board. He earned a Bachelor's of Science degree from Salisbury State University and a Master's of Education degree from Frostburg State University. He is the Director of Clinical Education and Associate Professor for the Respiratory Care Program at Allegany College of Maryland where he has taught for the past 19 years. He is married and has one son who will graduate from high school in June 2008. Tom has served on non-profit professional boards for the past 13 years and served as Speaker of the House for the American Association for Respiratory Care. He was elected and served on the MABE Board of Directors in 2007. He has owned and operated a martial arts school for the past 9 years in this community.

Dr. Fred Sloan, Member

Mr. Fred Sloan was re-elected to the Allegany County Board of Education on November 4, 2008. 

 

Mr. Mike Llewellyn, Member

On Monday, September 28, 2009, Governor Martin O'Malley appointed Michael Llewellyn to the Allegany County Board of Education to replace the late Jane Dawson until her term expires in January 2011. Llewellyn is an Associate Attorney at Geppert McMullen Paye and Getty where he practices civil litigation for individuals and corporations, estate planning, probate, municipal government, and real estate transactions. He is also an Associate Professor of Political Science and Criminal Justice at Allegany College of Maryland. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the Family Crisis Resource Center and Friends Aware, Inc. Llewellyn's father and brother are principals in the public school system at Mt. Savage School and Northeast Elementary School respectively. His mother teaches English at Mountain Ridge High School. He recieved his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 2001 from Frostburg State University and his Juris Doctor from West Virginia University College of Law in 2006. He resides in Cumberland with his wife.
