The study of language and literature is the basic component of the English & Reading program in grades 6 through 12. Through language and literature we understand ourselves, we contribute to society, and we express the human spirit. The “umbrella document” which informs instruction is the Maryland Core Learning Goals (CLG). These goals are reading and responding to text, composing, controlling language, and evaluating text. The Voluntary State Curriculum is in the draft stage for grades 9-12, and therefore high school teachers use the Core Learning Goals as their guiding document.
Students are encouraged to select and work hard in a rigorous program of required English courses, including merit, honors, and AP English Literature and AP English Language, and English electives such as Journalism, American Novel, and Standardized Test Prep. For struggling students, ACPS English program also provides a high school developmental reading program.
