| The High School Mathematics program is developed around the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards and the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC). It incorporates problem solving, communications, connections, and reasoning. It forms a framework enabling students to apply mathematics to real life situations. In addition to the content standards of the VSC the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students are incorporated into the mathematics classes.
According to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM), classrooms should be places where students regularly “engage in tasks and experiences designed to deepen and connect their knowledge.” To this end the Mathematics Department’s goal is to integrate into the curriculum mathematics content and instruction to facilitate the development of these connections.
Also in the PSSM, it states, “A curriculum is more than a collection of activities: it must be coherent, focused on important mathematics, and well articulated across the grades.” As a result, the State of Maryland and the Allegany County Board of Education has adopted a “standards based approach” for presenting the mathematics curriculum. The content standards have been identified in the VSC (Voluntary State Curriculum) for Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. For the Trigonometry and Calculus classes, the NCTM Standards and Expectations (National Council Teachers of Mathematics) are incorporated into the curriculum.
