English & Reading

The study of language and literature is the basic component of the English & Reading program in grades 6 through 12. Through language and literature we understand ourselves, we contribute to society, and we express the human spirit. The “umbrella document” which informs our instruction as English and Reading teachers is the Maryland Core Learning Goals (CLG). These goals are reading and responding to text, composing, controlling language, and evaluating text. From this document, the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) in Reading has been developed and approved by MSDE. All middle school English and Reading teachers adhere to this document in their instruction.

Students are encouraged to select and work hard in a rigorous program of required English courses.  For struggling students, ACPS English program also provides a middle school reading enrichment program.
